Lavender Reimagined: Upcycled Men’s Shirt and Yukata Dress
This A-line dress brings a playful reimagining of men’s shirts to life. Crafted from four men’s dress shirts, a vintage yukata, and a silk tie found at a senior center rummage sale, it’s a celebration of experimentation, color harmony, and freedom of movement — where tailoring meets whimsy and structure gives way to flow.
I started with a question: What if men’s shirts could become something entirely new?
The idea grew into an exploration of balance and transformation. The main body of the dress uses the sleeves of four men’s shirts, their soft purples and lavenders woven together to keep the eye moving. The cuffs became the bodice — a detail that lets you unbutton the neckline for more room or styling versatility.
Adding a vintage yukata panel changed everything. It shifted the mood from proper to playful, turning a quiet experiment into something joyful, kinetic, and full of character. The result is a dress that celebrates motion, ease, and reinvention — garments meeting each other halfway to become something entirely their own.
